但我这类话像无声的雨落下
在沈默的井里发出回声------
大家对着自己创造出来的霓虹神像膜拜祷告

在渐渐显现的字句中，它说着：
「先知的箴言，
写在地下铁的墙壁和便宜公寓的长廊里，
并且在沉默之声中低回不已---------」
1964年，Paul Simon和 Art Garfunkel两位好友组成二重唱，开始在纽约很多民歌餐厅表演，取得佳评，并得到一纸唱片合约，经典名曲 The sound of silence 沉默之声 在他们的首张专辑即已现身，但纯民谣风味的演绎并未遭到太多注目，两人失望得想舍弃踏入歌坛。
还好当时有两位曾为民谣摇滚大师Bob Dylan巴布狄伦制作专辑的制作人慧眼相重这首歌，请来一批乐手为这首歌的编曲加料，推出新的版本，并被电影「毕业生」选为插曲，两年后，Paul Simon在英国听到这首歌在美国成为排名冠军的消息，简直不敢相信。
1966年，两人推出第二张专辑，标题曲正是新版的 沉默之声 ，专辑中还有一首民谣摇滚风味的 I am a rock我是一块岩石 极受青睐，如诗般的歌词确立了 Paul Simon 诗人作曲家的地位。
